Unceasing Prayer

What would it look like or feel like, what would it be like, to live a life that prays without ceasing? How do you express prayer, by listening to and speaking to God, throughout all of life? Do your thoughts turn to God upon waking, as in the words of E.E. Cummings? “I thank you God for this most amazing day…”[1] img_0635Or, perhaps you are like the Psalmist: “Wake up…I will stir the sleepy dawn with praise!”[2]  Perhaps a view captures your attention like a surprising cloud formation, a beautiful scene such as a sunrise or sunset or you encounter the face of Christ in another in some surprising way that captures your attention. Perhaps it’s a simple “thank you” for a near miss of a traffic mishap or a prayer for both those in need and those who attend to them at the sound of a first responder siren.

It might be that our only way of being in all of life as followers of Christ, as people of God, is a prayerful one. Perhaps this is what the Apostle Paul has in mind when he encourages us to “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”[3]
